Hike to Taktsang Monastery for acclimatisation
Drive to Drukgyel Dzong and begin the trek. The trail follows the river through a narrow agricultural valley to the border army camp near Shana. (17 km, ~6 hours)
Ascend through a river valley with pine and rhododendron forests, with excellent views of Mount Jomolhari. Camp in a meadow at around 3,860 m. (19 km, 6–7 hours)
Continue along the river as the valley widens, with panoramic views of high ridges and snow‑capped peaks. Camp below a ruined fortress at the base of Mount Jomolhari. (19 km, ~6 hours)
Optional hikes around Mount Jomolhari, Jichu Drake, or surrounding ridges, or relax at camp and enjoy the scenery.
Cross Paro Chhu, pass the lakes of Tshophu, climb to Bhonte La (4,890 m), then descend to a meadow campsite at Chora (3,800 m). (16 km, 6–7 hours)
Cross ridges and small valleys, ascend to Takhung La (4,520 m), and camp at Thombu Shong near yak‑herder huts. (12 km, ~5 hours)
Climb to Thombu La (4,380 m) before descending steeply to Gunitsawa, where the trek ends and drive to Thimphu. (13 km, ~5 hours)
